KUALA LUMPUR: All eyes will be on the court complex here today as, for the first time in history, a former top brass member of the army is expected to be charged with corruption.

Former Army Chief Tan Sri Hafizuddiean Jantan and his second wife, Salwani Anuar, will face multiple graft charges for receiving proceeds of unlawful activities amounting to RM2,122,400 from 2024 until last year.

The husband and wife will be brought to two separate Sessions Courts in Jalan Duta.

They are facing charges under Section 4(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATFPUAA 2001).

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in a statement yesterday said they had obtained the Attorney-General’s consent to prosecute the couple in connection with investigations into a corruption case involving procurement tenders for the force.

According to the MACC, Hafizuddiean will also face two additional charges under the same section and Act at the Shah Alam Corruption Court in tomorrow.

“Salwani, meanwhile, will be charged with one additional count under the same section and Act at the Jertih Sessions Court in Terengganu next Monday,” said the statement.

At the same time, the MACC has also obtained consent to prosecute former armed forces chief, Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaafar, on Friday.
