Heavy rain triggers flash flood in Penang's southwest district

BAYAN LEPAS: Continuous heavy rainfall has caused flooding in several areas of the southwest district, including Teluk Kumbar, Sungai Batu, Bayan Lepas, and Kampung Seronok, following the overflow of nearby rivers.

Bayan Lepas assemblyman Datuk Azrul Mahathir Aziz said the existing drainage systems were unable to cope with the volume of water, despite low tide conditions.

“I have requested immediate assistance from the relevant government agencies to monitor the situation and provide aid to affected residents,” he wrote on his Facebook page, alongside several photos showing the flooding.

Azrul added that the district operations room had been activated, and a hotline (04-8669033) had been opened for residents in need of help.

He also advised motorists to avoid Jalan Tun Sardon and Bukit Baru, which were closed earlier this evening due to a landslide.

“The police have deployed personnel at the Sungai Batu traffic light junction to help ease congestion. I urge residents to remain calm, stay alert, and follow the safety instructions issued by authorities as the situation develops,” he said.
