GEORGE TOWN, Oct 22 — Heavy rain and strong winds in Penang early this morning caused trees to fall across roads in seven separate incidents.

Fortunately, no casualties or fatalities were reported. However, the incidents caused significant traffic congestion and disruption in the affected areas.

Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) state Operations Division assistant director John Sagun Francis said emergency calls about the fallen trees were received between 6.00am and 8.00am.

He said the affected locations were Jalan Paya Terubong, Jalan Paya Terubong near the Sungai Ara army camp, Jalan Bukit Lama in Balik Pulau, Jalan Bukit Sardon, Taman Lip, Jalan Padang Benggali in Teluk Air Tawar, and near Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Balik Pulau.

“The Penang JBPM Operations Control Centre received seven emergency calls regarding trees falling across roads and power cables, blocking traffic. But the situation is now safe and under control,” he said in a statement today.

John said Fire and Rescue teams were dispatched to carry out cutting and clean-up operations to clear the obstructed roads.

He confirmed that the incidents caused traffic congestion, with members of the public unable to pass through the affected areas until the clearance work was completed.

According to observations, many road users on Jalan Tun Sardon heading towards Balik Pulau were stranded after a large tree fell and completely blocked the route. — Bernama
