KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 2 — The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm warning for several parts of the country, including the Klang Valley, with severe weather expected until 5pm today.
Heavy rain, strong winds and thunderstorms are forecast to hit Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and several districts in Selangor, including Hulu Selangor, Gombak, Petaling, Hulu Langat and Sepang.
The agency urged residents in these areas to remain cautious, warning that weather conditions could deteriorate rapidly over the afternoon.
The short-term warning, issued at 2.10pm today, comes after signs showed rainfall exceeding 20 millimetres per hour is likely to occur for more than an hour.
MetMalaysia said such weather patterns could lead to flash floods, traffic disruptions and damage to property if precautions are not taken.
Apart from the Klang Valley, thunderstorms are also expected in parts of Perlis, Kedah, Perak, Terengganu, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan and Johor.
Eastern Malaysia is also on alert, with rain and strong winds forecast for several areas in Sarawak including Kuching, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei and Bintulu.
In Sabah, the affected districts include Sipitang, Beaufort, Tambunan, Kinabatangan and Lahad Datu, where residents are advised to stay indoors during severe weather.
MetMalaysia reminded the public that thunderstorm warnings are valid for no more than six hours per issuance and are updated regularly as conditions evolve.
The agency advised people to monitor its official channels for the latest updates and to exercise caution, especially when engaging in outdoor activities this afternoon.
