In a statement today, NPRA said JF Cream Herba was found to contain mercury and betamethasone 17-valerate, while JF Cream Treatment contained hydroquinone and tretinoin.

PETALING JAYA: The National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) under the Health Ministry (MOH) has banned JF Cream Herba and JF Cream Treatment after tests found they contained scheduled poisons.

In a statement today, NPRA said JF Cream Herba was found to contain mercury and betamethasone 17-valerate, while JF Cream Treatment contained hydroquinone and tretinoin.

“Following the detection, the notification for both products has been cancelled by the Director of Pharmaceutical Services, and they are no longer allowed to be sold in Malaysia.

“Mercury is banned in cosmetics as it can be absorbed into the body and cause kidney and nervous system damage, as well as affect brain development in young and unborn children. It may also lead to rashes, irritation, and other harmful skin reactions,” NPRA warned.

It also said products containing betamethasone 17-valerate, hydroquinone, and tretinoin are classified as medicinal products that must be registered with the Drug Control Authority and used only under the supervision of healthcare professionals.

“Unsupervised use of such products can cause skin thinning, irritation, acne, pigmentation changes, redness, peeling, and increased sensitivity to sunlight.”

The agency also reminded sellers and distributors to immediately stop the sale and distribution of these products, adding that such activities violate the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984.

Individuals convicted of the offence may face a fine of up to RM25,000 or imprisonment of up to three years for the first offence, and up to RM50,000 or five years’ jail for subsequent offences. Companies may be fined up to RM50,000 for the first offence and up to RM100,000 for subsequent ones.

Consumers currently using these products are advised to discontinue use immediately and seek medical advice if they experience any discomfort or adverse reactions.
The public can verify the notification status of cosmetic products through NPRA’s official website at www.npra.gov.my.
