KUALA LUMPUR: Segambut member of Parliament Hannah Yeoh has pledged RM10,000 to the Ekta Club of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor for its gala fundraising dinner tonight.
The funds will go towards establishing the club’s senior citizens activity centre.
Yeoh said she believes Malaysia remains resilient because of people—like the club’s members—who continue contributing to nation-building.
“(As the sports and youth minister) my job is to look after the youth and the young people today. They are impatient. They want to see fast results.
“When you try to pass down your expertise—you are all professionals—I encourage you to actively look around every day and mentor someone younger.
“Look out for successors. I need you to constantly think about what will happen when you’re no longer around,” she said in her speech at the gala dinner.
Also present were Ekta Club of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor president Datin Kuldip Kaur and Indian High Commissioner to Malaysia B.N. Reddy.
Kuldip said the activity centre would provide a safe space for senior citizens, with various programmes to support their physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing.
She said the centre also aims to address issues such as loneliness, isolation, and inactivity among the elderly.
“We hope the centre will offer a vibrant space where our elders can gather, learn, laugh, and enjoy social interaction.
“We plan to launch it in Segambut, Petaling Jaya, or Kelana Jaya—areas with significant Sikh populations.
“More than a centre, it will be a sanctuary of respect, connection, and community,” she said.
Ekta Club is a registered non-governmental organisation comprising professional Sikh women, focused on empowering the community through youth development programmes and free legal, medical, and welfare aid.
