KOTA KINABALU: The Pan Borneo Highway in Tuaran is progressing faster than anticipated, while a new solar-powered water system is providing rural villagers with access to clean drinking water for the first time, says Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
“I visited the work site today and I am happy with the progress, which is ahead of schedule,” said Sabah’s Chief Minister
He made this statement after inspecting a section of the 20.8km Serusup–Pinturu highway at Kampung Penimbawan on Wednesday (Sept 24).
The construction of the RM465mil road, which began on Jan 20 this year, was scheduled to be completed by July 19, 2028.
The project includes a 682m bridge linking Tuaran and Kota Belud.
Hajiji was briefed on the project by Sabah Public Works Department director Datuk Philemon Lajawai.
Deputy Chief Minister III and Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya was also present.
Hajiji also launched a system, developed by Jetama Sdn Bhd, that treats water drawn from underground tube wells and uses solar panels to power the filtration process at Kampung Baru-Baru in Tuaran.
“For the first time, the people in Kampung Baru-Baru can enjoy a treated water supply. I thank Jetama for installing the facility here,” he said.
The RM1.2mil mobile water system can produce 30,000 litres of clean water daily and store excess solar-generated power in batteries
Once treated, the water is stored in tanks and distributed directly to homes through pipes or simple distribution points.
Hajiji has asked Jetama to expand the initiative to more rural villages and islands across Sabah, where access to clean water remains a challenge.
Shahelmey and Jetama chairman Datuk Yusuff Manan were also present at the launch.
