KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested Sungai Buloh Pas chief Zaharuddin Muhammad in connection with the evictions in Kampung Sungai Baru, Kuala Lumpur, last week.
Dang Wangi police chief Assistant Commissioner Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman confirmed the arrest, which was framed under Sections 86, 353, and 324 of the Penal Code.
“I confirm this arrest is related to the Kampung Sungai Baru case the other day,” he said briefly.
Zaharuddin, who is the son-in-law of Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, had been vocal in his criticism of the eviction operations that affected residents in the disputed area.
A commotion erupted in Kampung Sungai Baru on Thursday when the authorities evicted residents from 37 houses.
During the protest by a group that opposed the evictions, Sulizmie was struck on the head by an object flung by one of the protesters.
The cops later arrested three suspects in connection with the incident, while seven others were detained on Saturday.
City police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said the seven men are believed to be members of an organisation, with one identified as its leader.
