Two Malaysian tourists were left with serious injuries after being set on fire by an unemployed man in Bangkok, Thailand, yesterday.
Lumpini police chief Yingyos Suwanno said the incident took place at 10pm while Ong Yik Leong, 26, and Gan Xiao Zhen, 27, were sitting on a staircase outside the Big C shopping mall in downtown Bangkok.
The suspect, a former security guard, poured a plastic bottle filled with thinner on the pair, who tried to run away, Bangkok Post reported.
The suspect chased them down before setting them on fire. He tried to make a run for it but was detained by members of the public.
Yingyos said Ong was being treated in the intensive care unit at the Police General Hospital while Gan was warded at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital.
He said the suspect admitted to randomly attacking the Malaysians out of frustration as he was recently fired as a security guard.
A video, which went viral, showed the public coming to the aid of the Malaysians and dousing the flames with bottles of water.
