Gabungan Rakyat Sabah is expected to benefit from the decision of two of its component parties to quit the coalition, a political observer said.
Zaki Harry Susanto believes that the departure of Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) and Sabah Progressive Party will allow GRS to be more focussed, organised, and stable, Jesselton Times reported.
“With STAR and SAPP leaving, GRS can operate more easily under a single symbol.
“It is straightforward, easy for voters to understand, and presents a more united image,” he was quoted as saying.
Zaki also said that with STAR and SAPP no longer part of GRS, it would reduce disputes over seats among the other components.
GRS comprises Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, PBS, Parti Maju Sabah, United Sabah National Organisation, Liberal Democratic Party, Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah, and Parti Cinta Sabah.
Yesterday, GRS confirmed that STAR and SAPP had left the coalition.
GRS secretary-general Masidi Manjun said the two parties had insisted on contesting under their respective banners in the upcoming state election, particularly fielding candidates against Pakatan Harapan.
He said GRS was firm that the pact reached with PH in July must be respected.
