Grandfather hopes grave exhumation brings justice for Zara Qairina

SIPITANG: The grandfather of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir hopes that the exhumation of her grave will proceed smoothly and bring her the justice she deserves.

Hasim Tua, 83, said the last time he met his granddaughter was during her birthday celebration last year. He remembers her as a quiet and diligent child who was dedicated to reading the Quran and performing prayers.

“That meeting became my last memory with her,” he said when speaking at the Kampung Tanjung Ubi Muslim Cemetery in Mesapol Lama today. “My hope is that this process will be eased and all evidence can assist in the investigation so that she can receive justice.”

The exhumation began about 5.30pm following the arrival of Zara’s parents and the family’s lawyers.

It was carried out as part of a court order to complete the investigation into Zara’s death, which has been linked to allegations of a bullying incident at a school in Papar on 16 July.

Police forensic teams, wearing white personal protective equipment (PPE) suits, were seen supervising the process, along with traffic police officers who escorted the forensic vehicle.
