The new electricity tariff kicking in back in July coincided with the conclusion of the Net Energy Metering (NEM) solar energy scheme. At the time, it did not look like the government will be renewing the program for new adopters. That has changed somewhat, with the announcement of a new rooftop solar initiative.

The Edge reports that this new initiative is dubbed the Solar Accelerated Transition Action Program, or Solar ATAP. Citing a Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) statement, this is a continuation of the NEM.

According to the report, offsets under Solar ATAP will be calculated based on the System Marginal Price mechanism. To keep a long explanation short, the higher the demand for electricity, the higher its price will be, with said price fluctuating every 30 minutes.

This mechanism is claimed to be an approach designed for long-tern sustainability, as opposed to the NEM which was limited by time frames and quota allocations. The NEM, prior to its conclusion, allowed residential homes to offset their bills on a one-to-one basis.

The Solar ATAP initiative will be launched in December, according to the report. Also mentioned is a separate Community Renewable Energy Aggregation Mechanism program. This allows households to lease their rooftop space to generate income, encouraging adoption among lower income households.
