Fans blamed scalpers after tickets for concerts by K-pop rapper G-Dragon and American rock band My Chemical Romance were found to be sold online at inflated prices.
PETALING JAYA:

The communications ministry will hold discussions with the domestic trade and cost of living ministry to address the problem of scalping concert tickets.

Deputy communications minister Teo Nie Ching said the domestic trade and cost of living ministry is reviewing the matter, including the possibility of introducing a bill to tackle the issue, Bernama reported.

“The communications ministry has also engaged with event organisers and ticketing companies to find the most suitable solution to this issue,” Teo told a press conference for the Johor leg of the Madani MSME Digital Grant Festival 2025 in Permas Jaya, Johor Bahru, today.

She said the problem is most common at high-profile international concerts, such as K-pop rapper G-Dragon’s in July, where soaring demand allowed scalpers to resell tickets at heavily marked-up prices.

Last Friday, Teo chaired a meeting with representatives from the domestic trade and cost of living ministry, and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to address concert ticket scalping, which is hurting the country’s entertainment industry.

She said the session gathered input and proposals from agencies directly involved in monitoring and enforcing concert ticket sales while also examining examples from countries with anti-scalping laws.

Last month, fans of My Chemical Romance cried foul after failing to secure tickets to the American rock band’s concert in Kuala Lumpur, scheduled for April 30 next year.

Scalpers were found on social media selling tickets to the concert at exorbitant prices, including one offering a Zone C category ticket worth RM499 for RM6,000.
