GEORGE TOWN: A government department director has been arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for alleged abuse of power in Penang.
In a statement on Tuesday (Aug 26), MACC said they have detained the government department director, stationed in a northern state, on suspicion of abusing her position by recommending her husband’s company to supply food and drinks for a programme in 2017.
According to sources, the suspect, a woman in her 50s, was detained at around 11am on Tuesday morning (Aug 26) at the Penang MACC office when she turned up to have her statement recorded.
“Based on initial investigations, the woman is believed to have used her position while serving as an officer in Northern Seberang Perai.
“The suspect is believed to have abused her power by recommending that her husband’s company be contracted to supply food and drinks worth almost RM4,000,” the source said.
Penang MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy, when contacted, confirmed the arrest.
“The case was being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009.
“The woman was expected to be charged in the Butterworth Special Corruption Court on Thursday (Aug 28),” he said.
