TUMPAT: Several government agencies joined forces to educate the public on maritime safety and compliance with maritime laws through the ‘perahu kolek’ (traditional boat) races.
Kelantan branch of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director Erwan Shah Soahdi said the programme was held at Kampung Teluk Renjuna, which has been designated an adopted village by the agency.
The event saw participation from nine teams, including village residents, the Kelantan MMEA, the Kelantan Fire and Rescue Department, the Immigration Department, and the Fisheries Department.
“This initiative aims to educate the community on water safety while raising awareness about maritime laws,” he said.
He added that the Sungai Kelantan delta comprises over 10 villages, where most residents rely on fishing and island-based products for their livelihood.
Several other agencies also participated to support the local community.
Village representative Mohd Amin Zulkahar Saari, 36, said many villagers were looking forward to the event, as it was both fun and educational.
“Boats are the main mode of transport here, and we are naturally skilled in handling them.
Some villagers have also frequently participated in similar competitions in Thailand,” he said.
