KOTA BARU: The General Operations Force (GOF) arrested 2,372 people, most of them suspected smugglers, in Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan last year.
GOF Southeast Brigade commander Senior Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Radzi Hussain said the operations also led to the seizure of goods worth more than RM853 million.
He said the arrests and seizures stemmed from 2,479 cases handled by three battalions under the Southeast Brigade across the three east coast states, including along the Kelantan-Thailand border.
“This achievement proves the high level of commitment and preparedness of Southeast Brigade personnel in combating cross-border crime, smuggling and other illegal activities that pose a threat to national security.
“The 2,372 detainees comprised locals, with the majority involved in smuggling activities, as well as undocumented migrants from various countries,” he said.
Ahmad Radzi said GOF’s Seventh Battalion recorded the highest seizure value of RM491 million from 768 cases with 591 arrests, followed by the Southeast Brigade GOF Intelligence Unit, which recorded seizures worth RM57 million.
He said the Eighth and Ninth battalions recorded seizure values of RM188 million and RM115 million respectively.
Commenting on Op Taring Wawasan Kelantan, Ahmad Radzi said the special operation also recorded significant results, with 1,832 arrests from 2,129 cases involving total seizures valued at nearly RM330 million.
“The operation focuses on curbing the smuggling of subsidised goods, drugs, weapons, illegal immigrants and organised crime along the Kelantan border.
“This success is the result of strong teamwork, effective intelligence and solid support from the local community,” he said.
He said the Southeast Brigade GOF would continue to strengthen its operational strategies, enhance personnel capabilities and intensify cooperation with other enforcement agencies to ensure national security and sovereignty remain safeguarded.
