KUALA LUMPUR: The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) will make its way to Greek waters before heading to Gaza, Muslim Care Malaysia media director Tuan Asri Tuan Hussein said.

He added that the group of Italian, Tunisian and Spainsh ships will reach Greece in one or two days depending on sea conditions, and link up with other convoys from European countries there.

“On the first day, there were high waves about 2.5 to three metres. Many of us, including myself, were seasick as the boat we’re on is rather small.

“Today, the third day, the sea is calmer, the waves aren’t so high,” he said when contacted by Bernama, adding that other challenges they currently face include unexpected ship movements and conditions.

The vessel Sirius, which has several Malaysian volunteers onboard, was reported to have suffered engine problems and the speed of the entire flotilla had to be reduced to ensure she was not left behind, he shared.

“Even though the ships use sails, there are certain times when engines are needed, especially when there is insufficient wind or when we need to catch up with other ships so we don’t get left behind. So when a ship suffers engine trouble, others need to slow down to wait for them,” Tuan Asri said.

All Malaysian volunteers under the Sumud Nusantara group are led by Cinta Gaza Malaysia chief executive officer Muhammad Nadir Al-Nuri Kamaruzaman and the approximately 70 vessels of the GSF, with over 1,000 volunteers, are carrying food, medicine and peace messages to Gaza, and are scheduled to arrive in the middle of this month.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ibrahim is patron of Sumud Nusantara, which involves Malaysia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives, the Philippines and Thailand.

The GSF, bringing together international coalitions from Europe, Asia, South Africa, Latin America and the Middle East, aims to break the siege of Gaza, with all delegations stressing the principle of non-aggression and the role of ships as a symbol of global solidarity for the Gaza crisis. – BERNAMA
