Gig Workers Act 2025 gazetted today

: The Gig Workers Act 2025 was gazetted today after receiving Royal Assent on Dec 16, the Human Resources Ministry said.

In a statement, the ministry said the Act will come into force on a date to be approved by the authorised minister and specified through a separate gazette.

“Accordingly, all provisions under the Act cannot yet be enforced until the effective date is officially announced.

“Any further announcements regarding the Act’s commencement will be communicated from time to time through the ministry’s official channels,” it said.

The gazetting of the Act marks an important step in the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s labour legal framework, particularly in regulating the rapidly growing gig employment ecosystem and providing a more comprehensive and systematic protection framework for gig workers in Malaysia.

The ministry said it will continue implementation preparations, including the drafting of subsidiary legislation, the alignment of governance mechanisms and engagement sessions with stakeholders to ensure the orderly and effective implementation of the Act in line with the realities and needs of the gig employment ecosystem.

On Sept 9, the Dewan Negara passed the Gig Workers Bill 2025, marking a milestone in protecting more than 1.2 million gig workers in Malaysia and ending the long-standing absence of legal protection for the group.
