IPOH: Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) has handed over RM420,000 in contributions to the next of kin of 42 students involved in the Gerik bus accident on June 9.

Its deputy vice-chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Prof Dr Norkhalid Salimin said each next of kin of the deceased and injured students received RM10,000 through the Tabung UPSI Prihatin Gerik.

“The fund was established to provide special assistance to the victims and their next of kin, serving as a symbol of solidarity from the university and the community towards the students’ families.

“Previously, RM1.7 million had been raised through donations from various parties,” he said in a statement today.

He said the handing-over ceremony was held yesterday at a resort in Pasir Puteh, , and attended by more than 100 next of kin.

In the early morning of June 9, 15 UPSI students were killed when the chartered bus they were travelling in from Jertih, Terengganu to the university’s main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak overturned after colliding with a Perodua Alza on the East-West Highway.

The crash also left 33 others injured, including the driver and three passengers of the MPV.
