KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 10 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government will implement targeted subsidies and ensure it is only for Malaysians, and not foreigners or large corporations.
He said the floating of chicken prices saved the government RM1 billion, egg prices saved RM1 billion, and restructuring the electricity tariffs saved RM6 billion.
“Around 85 per cent of users were not subjected to any tariff increase and some even enjoyed lower bills. In addition, the targeting of diesel subsidies saved us RM5 billion
while the public transport sector, fishermen, and certain logistics sectors continue to receive subsidised diesel prices in addition to giving RM200 per month is given to individual owners, farmers, and smallholders,” he said during the tabling of Budget 2026 today.
Anwar also stated that the targeting of RON95 subsidies has the potential to save at least RM2.5 billion. Moreover, the public can enjoy a lower fuel price of RM1.99 per litre.
“The Budi95 initiative is running smoothly, with over 10 million people enjoying RON95 at RM1.99 per litre. The database of 16.5 million eligible Malaysians is being updated to provide additional quotas to 23,000 registered boat owners and more than 52,000 active e-hailing drivers,” he said.
Overall, the targeting of subsidies is expected to save the nation about RM15.5 billion annually. Anwar said that every ringgit saved means more funds for welfare, more allocations for the cost of living, and greater investment in quality infrastructure for the people.
