Fourth PKR MP hit by AI-generated video blackmail

KUALA LUMPUR: Kota Anggerik member of parliament Najwan Halimi has become the latest lawmaker to be targeted by blackmail involving AI-generated pornographic content.

In a statement, Najwan said he believed the perpetrator employed the same modus operandi as in previous cases involving Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, Subang MP Wong Chen, and Sungai Petani MP Mohammed Taufiq Johari.

“Two days ago, I received a threatening email from an unknown account containing a screenshot of a video manipulated using AI technology, depicting my face.

“The email also demanded that I pay US$100,000 (RM421,000) to prevent the distribution of the alleged video.

“I wish to emphasise that such threats constitute a serious criminal act aimed at compromising my safety and tarnishing my dignity,” he said.

Najwan added that he had lodged a report with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and would also be filing a police report to ensure a thorough investigation into the threats.

He urged the public to remain vigilant against online fraud and blackmail.

“The circulation of such false and defamatory content not only damages an individual’s reputation but also threatens the safety and harmony of society,” he said.

Earlier today, Taufiq confirmed he had fallen victim to cyber blackmail involving AI-generated pornographic content.

Yesterday, Rafizi disclosed that he, too, had been blackmailed over a sex video.

He said he had received an email containing a purported clip allegedly showing him with another man. According to Rafizi, the video is believed to be an old clip that had been re-edited as part of a smear campaign, alongside attempts to hack his electronic devices.

He added that Wong had informed him he had received the same blackmail email.
