PETALING JAYA:

A Form 2 student at a school in Papar, Sabah, was alleged to have been physically abused by a senior student for returning late to his dormitory room on Sept 7.

The student claimed he was kicked in the stomach, slapped on the cheek, and punched in the nose by a Form 4 student at the school at about 11pm, Berita Harian reported.

The boy’s mother filed a report at the Papar police headquarters two days later after being informed of the incident by a teacher. A second report was lodged at the Kota Kinabalu police headquarters today.

Lawyer Nurshalilah Fauzan Mailin, representing the mother, said the incident appeared to involve bullying, and expressed concern that authorities may attempt to resolve the matter amicably between the parents of the students involved.

“If this matter is resolved in such a manner, bullying incidents will continue to occur without legal action being taken against the bully or other students who commit such offences,” she said.

The incident comes amid the inquest into the death of Form 1 student Zara Qairina Mahathir, who was found unconscious in a drain near her school’s dormitory, also in Papar, on July 17. She died in hospital in Kota Kinabalu a day later.

Following allegations of bullying, the Attorney-General’s Chambers on Aug 8 ordered her remains to be exhumed for a post-mortem, before announcing an inquest would be conducted into her death.

The inquest, headed by coroner Amir Shah Amir Hassan, will resume on Sept 17.
