KUALA LUMPUR: The wife of football star Faisal Halim filed for divorce at the Klang Syariah lower court earlier today.

The filing was confirmed by lawyers Datuk Akberdin Abdul Kader and Puteri Ummi Kartini Abd Latiff, who represented the 27-year-old captain during mention proceedings this afternoon.

Akberdin said Faisal, who was the victim of an acid attack at a mall last year, was notified of the divorce application by the lawyer representing his wife, Nur Syazwani Mizuana Shahril.

“The divorce was filed under Section 47 of the Islamic Family Law Enactment (), which covers mutually agreed divorces.

“However, as there had been a previous divorce declaration made out of court, we informed the court that this issue must first be resolved under Section 57 of the same enactment,” he said.

Section 57 deals with the penalty for pronouncing divorce outside the court.

He was in critical condition and underwent multiple surgeries, including a major skin graft.

The Sultan of , Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, had urged the authorities to quickly identify those responsible.

The ruler expressed deep frustration over the delay in investigations and said the case was simple and clear-cut given today’s technology.

Police later classified the case as requiring no further action but pledged to continue investigations.
