Football Bridging Closer Uruguay And Malaysia Ties, Says Machado

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 13 (Bernama) — Two-time World Cup champions Uruguay view football not only as a sport but as part of the nation’s identity, and their upcoming matches in Malaysia will help strengthen ties between the two countries.

Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Uruguay in Malaysia, L. Mariela Machado, said Uruguay’s reputation is inseparable from its footballing history and players who are recognised worldwide.

“Uruguay is known all over the world because of our footballers.

“When people hear names like Edinson Cavani, Luis Suárez, or Darwin Núñez, they immediately think of Uruguay. Football is in our DNA and it is the strongest bridge that connects us with other nations,” she told Bernama when met recently.

She added that Uruguay’s national team will soon play in Malaysia, giving local fans a rare opportunity to experience the country’s football culture up close.

“For us, to have our first team playing here is something really amazing. Football is always a bridge, and we are very proud to share this passion with Malaysians,” she said.

Machado added that the October friendlies against the Dominican Republic and Uzbekistan would not only thrill fans but also open opportunities for future football cooperation with Malaysia.

Uruguay, currently ranked 16th in the world, will face the Dominican Republic at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Oct 10, before taking on Uzbekistan at the Hang Jebat Stadium in Melaka on Oct 13.

The fixtures are part of the ‘2025 Stars of Uruguay, Global Friendly in Malaysia’ series promoted by Rainbow Hainan of China.
