Flood victims in Kelantan exceed 1,000, Nadma orders heightened disaster preparedness


KUALA LUMPUR: The number of flood victims in has risen to 1,170, while the situation in Terengganu remains unchanged as of 8pm tonight.

In , all victims are residents of Kota Baru, Bachok, and Tumpat, taking shelter at eight temporary evacuation centres (PPS).

The PPS in Kota Baru include SMK Raja Sakti, SK Tapang, SK Parang Puting, and SK Sering; in Tumpat, SK Pengkalan Kubor 2 and SK Seri Tumpat 2; while in Bachok, SK Pauh Sembilan and SK Jelawat.

A Bernama survey at Universiti Malaysia ‘s Kota Campus in Pengkalan Chepa tonight found some main roads within the campus submerged up to knee level.

In addition, according to the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), five main river basins in the state are at risk of rising water levels if heavy rain continues.

The affected areas in Kelantan are Pasir Mas, Pasir Puteh, Kota Baru, Bachok, Kuala Krai and Tumpat.

Meanwhile in Terengganu, the first wave of flooding has not changed since this afternoon, with 276 people taking shelter at the PPS Masjid Kampung, Pulau Redang.

In Kuala Lumpur, the National Disaster Control Centre (NDCC) of the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) has issued a disaster readiness notice, directing the activation of state and district Disaster Management Committees and raising the preparedness level.

The directive follows continuous heavy rainfall warnings, classified as severe and alert levels, covering six states, with a focus on high-risk areas.

Earlier, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issued a severe continuous rainfall warning for Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Kota Baru, Bachok, and Pasir Puteh in Kelantan from today until 24 Nov.

A continuous rainfall alert at the watch level was issued for Perlis, Kedah, Penang, and Perak (Kerian, Larut, Matang and Selama, Hulu Perak, and Kuala Kangsar) for the same period, while similar conditions are forecast in Kelantan (Jeli, Tanah Merah, Machang, Kuala Krai, and Gua Musang) and Terengganu until 26 Nov.
