KUALA LUMPUR: Flood risk has become a key factor in the technical assessment process for all new housing projects nationwide.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof stated this measure ensures buyers do not become victims of developments in flood-prone areas.
He confirmed all development applications submitted through the One Stop Centre must undergo comprehensive evaluation by technical agencies.
These evaluations include assessments by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage to ensure drainage and flood mitigation aspects are considered.
Approval is only granted after these flood risk factors have been properly addressed.
“This assessment refers to the Flood Mitigation Master Plan and Annual Flood Report,“ Fadillah said during Dewan Rakyat question time.
He explained this ensures local infrastructure can cope with climate change impacts like increased rainfall and rising sea levels.
Fadillah was responding to Datuk Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik from Balik Pulau regarding housing project flood risk status.
He further noted development control considers the State Structure Plan and Local Plan policies.
These plans outline land-use suitability and identify flood-risk zones across Malaysia. – Bernama
