WASHINGTON, Aug 7 (Bernama-Anadolu) — Five soldiers were shot Wednesday in an active shooter incident at the Fort Stewart base in the US state of Georgia, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) quoted the authorities.
“All soldiers were treated on-site and moved to Winn Army Community Hospital for further treatment. There is no active threat to the community,” the Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield said on Facebook.
All five soldiers are in stable condition and are expected to recover, said Senior Commander Brig. Gen. John Lubas.
He identified the suspect as Quornelius Radford, 28, an automated logistics sergeant with the Second Brigade Combat Team, who is now in custody.
Lubas said Radford has not previously deployed to combat and is being held in pretrial confinement pending a charging decision.
The shooting occurred at the suspect’s workplace and involved his colleagues, but the motive remains unclear.
He confirmed the suspect used a personal handgun, not a military weapon.
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said US President Donald Trump had been briefed and was monitoring the situation.
Trump said the Army Criminal Investigation Division is on site and pledged the perpetrator would be prosecuted “to the fullest extent of the law.”
Fort Stewart trains and deploys active and reserve Army units and is home to the 3rd Infantry Division. It is located about 64 kilometres southwest of Savannah.
