PENANG: Five policemen have been detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) over an alleged RM9,000 bribe linked to a stolen motorcycle case.
The suspects, including a senior officer and aged between their 20s and 40s, were arrested at the Penang MACC office between 2pm and 5pm today while giving their statements.
Sources said the alleged bribery took place during an operation in Seberang Prai last Friday, where the policemen were believed to have conspired to solicit the bribe from a motorcycle workshop owner.
“One of the suspects allegedly demanded and accepted cash in exchange for not taking action against the individual for possessing a stolen motorcycle,” he said.
Penang MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy confirmed the arrests.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009 for soliciting or receiving gratification.
All five suspects will be detained for 24 hours before being released on MACC bail.
