TUARAN: Five students from the Kota Kinabalu Institut Kemahiran Mara (IKM) were killed in a collision between a car and a lorry in Jalan Sulaman here this afternoon.
The victims, all men aged 19 and 20, were pronounced dead at the scene following the 2pm crash near the Rela Training Centre.
They were travelling in a Toyota Wish heading from the direction of Sepanggar to Kota Belud when the vehicle was believed to have gone out of control and drifted into the opposing lane where it crashed head-on into a trailer lorry laden with gravel stones.
All five victims were pulled out from the car by firefighters, who had to use specialised tools, before being sent to Tuaran Hospital.
The deceased were Harianto Anuar, 20; Neil Stanly Pletinie, 20; Mohammad Ikhwan Kurniawan, 20; Mohamad Zuhaikal Mohd Zaidy, 20; and another who has yet to be identified.
District police chief Superintendent Noraidin Ag Maidin said the driver of the trailer lorry was not injured in the incident.
He said the case was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
