GUA MUSANG: Ten families were forced to return to the temporary evacuation centre (PPS) at SK Limau Kasturi less than 24 hours after going home when rising waters inundated their houses again yesterday evening.
Che Jah Hussin, 74, said she had no choice but to evacuate once more after the PPS was reopened at 7pm.
She said police personnel assisted her in moving back to the centre, as she had only been at home for a few hours.
“I returned home at 9.30am yesterday after being allowed to leave, and I helped my children clean the house.
“But when the flood siren sounded, I immediately followed the authorities’ instructions because I was worried something might happen, especially since the water level in Sungai Galas was rising.
“I am very grateful to the police, who are always ready to help us evacuate,” she said.
Another resident, Azizah Othman, 61, said her home in Kampung Limau Kasturi is located in a low-lying area that is frequently hit by floods.
She said she is usually among the first to evacuate to the PPS each time flooding occurs, as her husband is bedridden following a stroke.
“Since yesterday afternoon, residents had begun returning home to inspect the damage and clean up the mud left behind by the floods.
“The Sungai Kerak bridge was also passable again as the river level had receded. However, continuous rain since yesterday morning caused the water levels in Sungai Galas and Sungai Kerak to rise again, triggering the flood warning siren.”
Azizah added that after living in Kampung Limau Kasturi for 31 years, she has become accustomed to dealing with floods and relocating to evacuation centres.
According to the Social Welfare Department’s Info Bencana portal, as of 8.30am, 10 families comprising 29 individuals were sheltering at the SK Limau Kasturi PPS.
Meanwhile, data from the Kelantan Drainage and Irrigation Department (JPS) Info Banjir website showed that the Sungai Galas water level at Kampung Limau Kasturi has exceeded the danger mark, recording 59.43 metres compared with the normal level of 53.00 metres.
