PETALING JAYA, 4 Sept (Bernama) — The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has emphasised that the election of its president has always been based on the expectation that the individual chosen will serve until the end of the term.
Acting FAM president Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mahadi said this principle has been the main consideration during each election process, but at the same time he did not rule out the possibility of unforeseen circumstances.
“It is simple, when we elect someone (as president), at the very least we want their term to last until the end. But if something happens during the process, that is beyond our expectations.
“No one in the association wants such things to happen (ending early). We must elect the person with good intentions and that person too must want to complete their term,” he told a press conference after chairing the Fourth FAM Executive Committee Meeting for the 2025-2029 term at Wisma FAM, Kelana Jaya, here today.
He was commenting on Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh’s suggestion that FAM choose a president who can serve a long tenure for leadership continuity in the association.
At the same time, Mohd Yusoff also gave assurance that all ongoing national projects between the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) and FAM, such as the National Training Centre project in Putrajaya, would not be disrupted and will proceed as planned.
“There will not be the slightest impairment, delay or hindrance. Not at all, which means everything already planned will run as usual,” he said.
Last Wednesday, FAM confirmed that Datuk Mohd Joehari Mohd Ayub had expressed his intention to relinquish the association’s top post through a resignation letter submitted recently.
In the same development, FAM also announced that Mohd Yusoff Mahadi has been appointed Acting president with immediate effect, while stressing that Mohd Joehari’s resignation was his personal decision and that there was no ‘hidden hand’ behind the shocking move.
