KUALA LUMPUR: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has called for an immediate investigation into the assault on sports journalist and National Press Club (NPC) deputy president Haresh Deol in Bangsar today.
He said that the safety of media practitioners must never be compromised while they carry out their duties.
“I was informed about the incident while attending a programme in Kota Kinabalu and immediately contacted Haresh’s brother for further details. Haresh has informed me that he has filed a police report and is currently completing his medical report,” he said in a Facebook post today.
Earlier, Haresh, co-founder of news portal TwentyTwo13, took to X saying that he was attacked by two men while walking to his car, with a third individual filming the incident on a mobile phone.
Brickfields district police chief ACP Hoo Chang Hook said in a statement that police were currently tracking three men believed to be involved in the assault, which took place on Jalan Maarof near a shopping mall parking lot as Haresh walked along the sidewalk towards Jalan Telawi.
