KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 31 (Bernama) — Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has described the victory of the national mixed doubles pair, Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei, who emerged champions at the World Championships in France tonight, as a meaningful gift in conjunction with the National Day today.
Through a Facebook post tonight, Fahmi also congratulated and expressed gratitude to the Malaysian heroes for their proud achievement on the world stage.
In the final held at the Adidas Arena, the world number four pair defeated second seeds Jiang Zhen Bang–Wei Ya Xin 21-15 in the first set.
In the second set, they continued to suppress the Chinese pair’s fightback, sealing a 21-14 victory to deliver Malaysia’s first-ever gold in the mixed doubles event after a full 40 minutes of thrilling action.
The success ended nearly two decades of waiting, as Malaysia’s previous best achievement in the mixed doubles was reaching the semi-finals through Koo Kien Keat-Wong Pei Tty at the 2006 edition in Madrid, Spain.
