KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 13 (Bernama) — Terengganu FC fought back from behind to advance to the FA Cup quarter-finals this season after defeating Imigresen FC 3-0 in the second leg of the round of 16 at Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium, Kuala Nerus, tonight.
Winger Muhammad Akhyar Rashid played a key role by scoring twice to help the hosts progress with a 4-2 aggregate victory.
Terengganu, who lost 1-2 in the first leg on Aug 17, launched wave after wave of attacks on Imigresen’s goal right from the start of the match.
Their efforts paid off when Cameroonian striker Junior Sam Ngong opened the scoring in the 17th minute, pouncing on a rebound spilled by opposing goalkeeper Muhammad Zarif Irfan Hashimuddin after a powerful strike by Nurillo Tukhtasinov.
Muhammad Akhyar then doubled the two-time champions’ advantage in the 31st minute with a fine solo run down the left before curling a low shot into the net, and he continued his brilliance by extending the lead in the 51st minute after finishing off a pass from Sam Ngong.
The result means Terengganu will face the winners between Kuching City FC and DPMM FC in the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, Brazilian striker Chrigor Moraes netted a hat-trick with a goal in first-half stoppage time and two more in the 76th and 80th minutes to inspire Selangor FC to a 9-0 thrashing of Malaysian University at Petaling Jaya City Council Stadium, Kelana Jaya, thus confirming their quarter-final berth with a 12-1 aggregate win.
Defender Kevin Deeromram also shone with a brace, opening the scoring for the Red Giants in the 12th minute and adding another in the 48th.
Four more goals for Kinoshi Katsuhito’s side came from defender Quentin Cheng in the 21st minute, import player Alvin Fortes in the 55th, and substitutes Zach Clough in the 70th and Ahmad Zikri Mohd Khalili in second-half stoppage time.
Selangor will meet Negeri Sembilan FC in the quarter-finals after the latter eliminated PDRM FC with a 5-1 aggregate win.
Earlier, match commissioner Mohd Azhar Ahmad postponed the tie between Sabah FC and Bunga Raya FC after heavy rain left the pitch waterlogged at Likas Stadium, Kota Kinabalu.
Sabah hold a commanding advantage after thrashing Bunga Raya 6-0 in the first leg on Aug 17.
