PETALING JAYA: Efforts to bring fugitive businessman Datuk Seri Muhammad Adlan Berhan and his lawyer Mansoor Saat back to Malaysia are stalled due to legal differences with foreign jurisdictions.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said that despite the agency’s networking efforts, particularly those involving the Home Ministry, assistance could not be provided.

“There is indeed cooperation, including with Interpol and other agencies.

“But there are also countries that cannot provide assistance even through Interpol, because one of those countries, I won’t mention which, has laws that prevent them from cooperating in cases where our charges could lead to caning as a punishment.

“Since that country does not recognise caning as a form of punishment, they are unable to assist in extraditing the offenders to Malaysia.

“This means they do not provide help in tracking them,” he told reporters after attending a dialogue session titled Private Sector Compliance and Culture of Integrity.
