KUALA LUMPUR: Starting this month, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) will begin a trial run of its new Vehicle Access Management System (VAMS), designed to improve kerbside traffic flow and provide smoother access to the terminals.
Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) said the Terminal 1 trial at Level 5 (departure drop-off) and Level 3 (arrival pick-up) will run until Nov 30.
For Terminal 2, the trial will start on Sept 15 and continue until the same end date.
The system aims to smoothen traffic, improve safety, and reduce congestion caused by vehicles waiting too long at the kerbside.
How it works:
Vehicles entering the drop-off or pick-up zones will pass through barrier gates and have a 10-minute grace period to complete drop-offs or pick-ups.
The system will monitor entry and exit times to track how long vehicles remain.
No penalty fees will be imposed during the trial, even if drivers exceed the grace period.
The trial will monitor traffic flow, driver behaviour, and system performance.
Data collected will help determine the final grace period and penalty fees after the trial.
After the trial:
Penalty fees will apply to vehicles overstaying the grace period.
The final fee structure and grace period will be announced after data analysis.
Why this matters:
The system aims to ease congestion, improve safety by preventing blockages, and provide smoother passenger experiences, especially ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
Tips for travellers:
Plan ahead and be ready to load or unload quickly within the 10-minute window.
Coordinate with passengers in advance and wait in car parks or holding areas before pick-ups.
Follow signage, as barrier gates and lane markings will guide vehicles into the correct zones.
