Ethiopia endorsed to host COP32 in 2027, while Australia and Turkey remain deadlocked for COP31 venue, potentially forcing Bonn default

BELÉM: Ethiopia appears poised to host the 2027 UN climate change conference following endorsement from African nations.

The announcement emerged during COP30 in Brazil, with the Africa Group of Negotiators confirming Ethiopia’s selection over Nigeria.

Richard Muyungi, chair of the Africa Group of Negotiators, confirmed the group “has endorsed Ethiopia” for the 2027 conference.

The Brazilian COP30 presidency verified Africa’s choice, though formal adoption by all participating nations remains pending until November 21.

Rukiya Khamis of nonprofit 350.org welcomed “the announcement of COP32 in Ethiopia and look forward to elevating Africa’s climate priorities and leadership.”

UN climate conferences rotate among five regional blocs, with Africa scheduled to host in 2027.

Ethiopian Ambassador to Brazil Leulseged Tadese Abebe responded “we look forward to welcoming all of you to Addis Ababa for COP32” during a plenary session.

Addis Ababa, hosting the African Union headquarters, regularly accommodates major international gatherings.

Meanwhile, COP31’s 2026 host remains uncertain as Australia and Turkey continue competing within the Western Europe and Other States group.

Australia proposes Adelaide while Turkey maintains its Antalya bid, creating an unprecedented potential deadlock.

If unresolved, COP31 would default to UN Climate Change headquarters in Bonn, Germany – a first in conference history.
