An elderly man was remanded for four days from today on suspicion of having set fire to his second wife’s house at Kampung Langkap Baru in Sungai Tong, Setiu, Terengganu today.
The 79-year-old man was arrested at the Chabang Tiga police station in Kuala Terengganu at about 4.10am today, Harian Metro reported.
Setiu police chief Zain Mat Dris said the man is believed to have flung an incendiary device into the house through an open window.
“The suspect left the area shortly after. The incident is believed to have occurred at 1am,” he said.
Zain said the man’s stepson had lodged a police report.
“The motive is still being determined,” he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to cause damage.
The suspect’s 26-year-old stepson, who was alone in the house at the time, said he saw his stepfather in the compound just before a fire broke out in the living room.
The stepson, whose name was not reported, said his 65-year-old mother was spending the night at his sibling’s house next door.
“I saw my stepfather escaping, and could only shout (for help) and not chase him because the fire was spreading,” he said.
