KUALA LUMPUR: An elderly man suspected of being involved in illegal cigarette distribution was arrested during Op Taring Alpha 1 at a house in Klang, Selangor, yesterday.
The man, in his 60s, was detained in an operation conducted by officers from the General Operations Force (GOF) Battalion 4 intelligence branch in Semenyih and South Klang police headquarters criminal investigation division at about 2.30pm.
GOF Battalion 4 commanding officer Superintendent Amanjit Singh said 750 cartons of white cigarettes believed to be untaxed were also seized.
He said a Nissan Almera, suspected of being used in the distribution activities, was also confiscated.
“The total value of the seizure from the raid is estimated at around RM320,000.
“The suspect and all seized items were taken to the South Klang police headquarters for further investigation under the Customs Act 1967,” he said in a statement today.
Amanjit said the suspect was a worker and that the cigarettes were intended for the Klang Valley.
“The modus operandi involved using a residential house as a storage site before the cigarettes were distributed using vehicles,” he said.
