JERTIH, Oct 25 — A businessman with the honorific title ‘Datuk’ is among eight individuals detained by police to assist investigations into a brawl that went viral yesterday in a live social media broadcast.

Besut District Police Chief, Supt Azamuddin Ahmad, said all eight men, aged between 21 and 40, were detained while giving statements at the Besut District Police Headquarters.

He added that the 36-year-old victim who filed a police report on the incident was also detained to assist with investigations.

“We received a report at 1.32am today regarding an incident believed to have occurred around 11pm in front of a house in Jertih. According to the report, a man claimed he was assaulted by a group of individuals while livestreaming on his mobile phone in front of the suspect’s house.

“At the time, the victim had gone to the suspect’s home to discuss a misunderstanding between them. Upon arriving in front of the house, the victim refused to enter the property as requested by the suspect, which led to an argument and commotion,” Supt Azamuddin said in a statement today.

He further explained that several family members of the suspects came out of the house, resulting in a scuffle. The victim’s mobile phone, used for the live broadcast, was reportedly taken by one of the suspect’s family members.

“The victim sustained injuries including bruises to the back of the head, both elbows, left fingers, and the back, caused by the struggle and falling,” he said, adding that the victim’s vehicle was also reportedly damaged.

All suspects were brought to the Kuala Terengganu Court this morning for remand applications. The case is being investigated under Section 147 and Section 427 of the Penal Code for rioting and mischief.

Supt Azamuddin urged anyone with information on the suspects to contact the case investigating officer, Insp Mohamad Effie Ezral Mohd Izham, at 09-6956222 extension 5913.

Yesterday, a video believed to have been recorded by the victim and his wife with their child inside a car before the incident and ensuing chaos went viral. Among those involved in the incident is reportedly a businessman involved in land dealings. — Bernama
