Eight arrested in Johor over suspected scam call centre

MUAR: Eight people were arrested, including three women, after police busted a suspected scam call centre in Taman Sungai Abong, police said.

The 4.40am raid was carried out yesterday by officers from the Commercial Crime Investigation Division of the Muar district police headquarters following intelligence and public tip-offs.

District police chief, Assistant Commissioner Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz, said those detained were aged between 25 and 40.

The premise had served as the syndicate’s operations centre. It had been active since June last year.

Initial investigations showed the group used scam scripts, posing as representatives of financial institutions and loan companies to deceive victims via phone calls and social media.

Police seized 20 smartphones, laptops, a wireless modem, bank books and notebooks containing scam scripts, with items valued at about RM10,000.

Raiz Mukhliz said the eight suspects were among 20 individuals arrested so far for alleged involvement in commercial crimes targeting victims nationwide.

They are being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and have been remanded for four days until Monday.

He added that between Wednesday and Thursday, police arrested 12 others in several states over suspected fraud, including phone scams, e-commerce purchase scams and bank account misuse, with total losses exceeding RM190,000.
