Education Ministry to review anti-bullying recommendations, boost child protection

KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry will review all recommendations made by the Special Select Committee on Women, Children and Social Development to curb bullying in educational institutions.

The ministry said it had taken note of proposals, which include improving the bullying complaint channel to make it more child-friendly, allowing anonymous reports, and safeguarding students’ personal information.

“The suggestions include immediate and widespread publicity regarding bullying, providing the option to make complaints anonymously, and preserving the confidentiality of students’ personal information.

“Among (the recommendations) are ensuring protection for complainants, establishing a special anti-bullying committee at the school level, and improving the guidelines for managing bullying.

“All recommendations will be scrutinised and acted on immediately,” it said in a statement today.

It said ongoing measures are being implemented to enhance safety across all institutions under its management.

It also welcomed ideas and input from all levels of society, adding that cooperation from all parties is important in creating a safe ecosystem in schools nationwide.
