Education Ministry lists foods banned from sale at schools

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 27 — In a move to promote healthier eating habits and support children’s growth, Malaysia’s Ministry of Education (KPM), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (KKM), has officially banned the sale of 12 categories of food and beverages in schools.

Banned Food Items:

  • Expired or toy-like foods: Anything past its expiry date or resembling toys is prohibited under the Food Regulations 1985.
  • Processed food  Items like fries, sausages, nuggets, and lok cheng (skewered snacks), including fish, chicken, or meat balls.
  • Junk food
  • Candies and chocolates: These were specifically mentioned in the list
  • Creamy and sugar-laden treats
  • Instant packaged meals: Includes instant noodles, bihun, ramen, kuetiau, porridge, and soups with seasoning packets.
  • Frozen desserts: Ice confections and ice cream must meet strict health standards set by KKM and KPM.
  • Pickled foods

Banned Beverages:

  • Tea and coffee: Reserved strictly for teachers.
  • Sweetened drinks: Cordials with creamer, 3-in-1 mixes
  •  Energy drinks (isotonic, herbal), fruit juices with less than 35 per cent fruit content as well as carbonated beverages are off-limits due to high sugar content.
  • Alcoholic drinks: Completely banned to encourage a healthy lifestyle from a young age.
