KUANTAN, Nov 11 — Police discovered 240 kilogrammes of cannabis worth RM5.34 million inside a car abandoned at an East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) construction site in Bentong, Pahang.

Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the discovery was made at around 11.30am on Nov 4 following a report from a contractor who spotted the suspicious vehicle left on a weighbridge at the site along Jalan Lama Bentong-Bukit Tinggi, Berita Harian reported.

A team of officers was dispatched to the location to investigate the vehicle, which had been left unattended for several hours.

Upon inspection, police found 120 transparent plastic packets containing cannabis buds packed in nine boxes inside the car.

Another 120 packets of compressed cannabis were discovered in four gunny sacks placed within the vehicle.

Checks revealed that the car was registered under a man from Johor and was using a valid number plate.

Police are now tracing the owner to assist in investigations into how the vehicle and the drugs ended up at the construction site.

Yahaya said authorities have not ruled out the possibility that the cannabis was being transported by hired couriers or “transporters.”

He added that investigations are ongoing and that no arrests have been made so far.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty upon conviction.
