SEREMBAN: Police have obtained a seven-day remand for a couple over an investigation into the drowning of two children here.

Port Dickson OCPD Supt Maslan Udin said the 46-year-old man, the father of the two children, and the 41-year-old woman would be remanded until Sept 11.

He said the woman is believed to be the man’s partner.

“We are also looking for the mother of the two deceased children,” he said, adding that police have yet to establish if the man is still married to the victims’ mother.

The two young siblings drowned when the car they were in, which was parked next to a river here, started moving and plunged into the river.

The victims, an eight-year-old girl and her six-year-old brother, were resting in the car with the couple just before the incident.

Based on the police’s preliminary probe, the man got out of the parked car to have a cigarette when it suddenly began rolling towards the river.

The car engine was off at the time.

Passers-by managed to pull the woman out in time but the children were trapped in the vehicle.

Negri Sembilan police chief Dep Comm Datuk Alzafny Ahmad said police detained the couple as there were inconsistencies in their statements.

He said police were investigating the case under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

A background check on the 46-year-old male suspect revealed he had 16 previous cases and is on the wanted list for four offences.

DCP Alzafny said checks showed that the woman did not have a criminal record and drug tests on both suspects were negative.

He said the car involved had been reported stolen.
