PETALING JAYA:

Two men led the police on a nearly 90km high-speed chase around Shah Alam early this morning before being apprehended in front of the police headquarters.

Shah Alam police chief Iqbal Ibrahim said a bottle believed to contain ketum juice was found in the Proton Wira after the hour-long chase.

The 24-year-old driver had five previous drug-related convictions, while the second suspect, aged 18, had no criminal record.

Iqbal said the incident began when a police patrol car spotted a blue Proton Wira at the Section 7 commercial centre in Shah Alam at around 1.30am and ordered its driver to pull over.

“Police officers used their siren and loudspeaker to order the driver to stop, but the driver sped off in a reckless manner,” he said in a statement.

This led to the 90km chase around Shah Alam which involved six other police patrol cars and ended in front of the main gate of the police headquarters in Section 9, Shah Alam.

The men are being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant in the discharge of duty, which provides for a two-year jail term or a RM10,000 fine upon conviction.

They are also being probed under Section 30(3) of the Poisons Act for possessing ketum juice. If convicted, they face a five-year jail term, a RM100,000 fine, or both.
