PETALING JAYA:

Dungun MP Wan Hassan Ramli and his wife escaped unhurt after their car caught fire on the East Coast Expressway 2 (LPT2) near the Paka toll plaza today.

Wan Hassan said they were driving home to Dungun, Terengganu, from Kuantan, Pahang, at about 12.15pm when he noticed the “check engine” light on the dashboard of their Toyota Vellfire.

“The moment I stopped, a motorist alerted me that there was smoke coming from beneath the engine,” Berita Harian quoted him as saying.

He said he contacted the PLUS patrol for help, but the engine soon caught fire.

“The flames spread quickly and we could only take our important belongings before getting out to safety,” he said.

The fire destroyed the vehicle.

Terengganu fire and rescue Zone 2 chief Rohaya Jamil said 10 firefighters from the Kerteh fire station went to the scene after receiving an emergency call at 12.47pm.

“The blaze was extinguished at about 1.25pm. The cause and losses are still under investigation,” she said.
