KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur Education Department will conduct an internal investigation to review compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) in organising a water confidence programme, following the death of an 11-year-old schoolboy.

In a statement Saturday (Nov 8), the department said the case is being investigated by the police, and it gave assurances that full cooperation will be provided during the ongoing investigation.

“The department extends its condolences to the family of the student who drowned during a recent programme. Initial support and assistance have been provided to the family,” the statement read.

According to the department, a team of counsellors and guidance teachers has been mobilised to provide psychosocial support to students, teachers, and all school staff involved.

The 11-year-old boy, a student at a primary school in Kuala Lumpur, died after receiving two days of treatment following a drowning incident during a water confidence support programme at the Desa Tasik Sports Complex Swimming Pool, Sungai Besi, on Wednesday (Nov 5).

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said they received a report on the incident involving the student from the Integrated Special Education Programme (PPKI) on the same day it occurred. – Bernama
