LAHAD DATU: A man was killed after the car he was driving collided with a lorry and caught fire at a junction near Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sandau here today.

In the 3.15pm incident, the Toyota Vios driven by the 24-year-old victim was completely engulfed in flames, believed to have been caused by the impact of the crash.

Lahad Datu Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) chief, Senior Fire Superintendent Sumsoa Rashid, said they received an emergency call about the incident at 3.20pm.

Following the alert, a team of eight firefighters with two fire engines was dispatched to the scene.

“Upon arrival, the Toyota Vios was found to be 100 per cent burnt. The team immediately carried out firefighting operations using a hose reel.

“The fire was brought under control by 4.28pm and the operation ended 10 minutes later,” he said in a statement.

Sumsoa said the driver of the Toyota Vios was pronounced dead at the scene by a Health Ministry medical officer.

“The victim was pulled out of the vehicle by members of the public before the car was completely destroyed by fire. His body has been handed over to the police for further action.

“Two other men, aged 24 and 34, who were in the lorry, sustained injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment,” he added.
