PETALING JAYA:

Fatigue and lack of sleep are believed to have caused the bus crash near Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) yesterday, which left a teacher and three kindergarten pupils injured.

In a statement today, Serdang police chief Farid Ahmad said the driver had 13 previous traffic summonses but was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

“The investigation found the accident was caused by the driver’s lack of sleep and tiredness,” he said, adding that the driver likely dozed off before the bus skidded and hit a tree.

“The driver has been remanded for two days to assist in our investigation.”

The accident occurred at about 12.20pm yesterday when the bus, carrying five teachers and 30 children, skidded and crashed into a tree along Jalan Persiaran Universiti 1.

Dashcam footage, which went viral, showed the bus veering off course before the impact.

Three children and a teacher suffered head injuries and were treated as outpatients at Sultan Idris Shah Hospital in Serdang.

Road transport department (JPJ) director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli said a safety audit will be conducted on the bus operator.
